Belated, but in Reality, Totally Timeless

The UM/ND football game last weekend was glorious mayhem to the last second and enjoyed immensely in our household, at least by those who know, watch and stay awake until midnight watching Michigan football. The next day, Kevin found this little gem in the combox on MGoBlog:

When I got back to my tailgate there was a car full of dame fans next to me. As we're both packing up our respective stuff I see this guy take off his ND shirt and put it on the ground, go into his truck, pull out a bottle of some form, pour the contents on the shirt, strike a match and lights the tanker on fire, then gets in his truck and drives away leaving the smoldering shirt. I do in fact feel for ND fan right now.

Yowza. That's some serious football fan pain. While I don't feel the general hatred and vengeance that some UM fans feel toward ND, I totally got a laugh out of this one. I also had some sympathy. Let's be honest. What Michigan fan didn't feel tempted to burn some Maize and Blue after the Appalachian State debacle?

But who wouldn't feel some Michigan love after seeing Little 'Nard Dawg?

Tried the Tri

Last weekend Kevin and I raced at the Sanford and Sun Triathlon. We both raced the sprint distance, which was challenging without being too exhausting. This was my first triathlon, and it may very well be my last. Not because I didn't enjoy it, but mostly because of the time it takes to train for all three disciplines. It's relatively easy for me to pull on a pair of shoes, load the kids in the jogger and hit the road. It's another matter all together to find the time to get to the pool or to do a long bike ride.

I wanted to include some sweet action pics from the race, but I really didn't want to pay the $20, and the site with said pics was pretty clunky, necesitating a lot of searching.

But, I do have a great video of Kevin using his sweet new racing bike. Heh.

Growin' Up Right

Kevin has decided that our baby's first major sporting event should be a Red Wings' hockey game at the Joe Lewis arena. Why?

In Kevin's words...
"I wasn't Red Wings fan for the first six years of my life. I don't want that to happen to our child."

Sour Grapes

I found these words from Hank Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees, rather amusing. This is the first year since 1995 that the Yankees haven't been in the MLB playoffs. It's also the first year since 1996 without celebrated ex-manager, Joe Torre, at the helm. He currently manages the LA Dodgers, who have clinched a spot.

As Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner whined in The Sporting News: "It isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not. This is by no means a knock on Torre — let me make that clear — but look at the division they're in ...

"I'm happy for Joe, but you have to compare the divisions and the competition. What if the Yankees finish the season with more wins than the Dodgers but the Dodgers make the playoffs? Does that make the Dodgers a better team? No."

Excuses, excuses, Hank. Better luck next year.

Where's the justice??

Check out this article highlighting the 10 Most Obnoxious Fan Bases in college football. I knew that Michigan would be close to the top (#2), but Ohio State is only #7. Honestly. Any team with fans who burn couches in the streets, spell the name of the worst state ever with their arms as a battle cry, and parade around in jewelry made of of dried and shellacked buckeye nuts needs to be in the top three.

The Crossroads of American Humanity

There are those places in town where you could meet just about anyone. The Department of Motor Vehicles, the gas station, Dunkin' Donuts (if you live out east where you can't drive 1 mile without seeing two Dunkin' Donuts stores, one on the right side of the road and one on the left)...and the Sprint Store.

Kevin and I have finally taken a leap into the 21st century; each of us now have our own cell phone. I went to the Sprint store yesterday to add a line and pick out a phone and I was amazed at the array of people.

  • a female construction worker seeking the water/dust/heat/practically bomb-proof phone

  • the executive in shambles over his fritzing Blackberry

  • the teenager smacking gum and pouring over the picture taking, MP3 playing, super-texting phone

  • and me - the pregnant lady who just wanted a phone with good reception that won't get crushed in my abyss-of-a-purse

After about 45 minutes of decision making, activating, phone book transferring, and money spending, I got the phone. It does take pictures, so I promptly snapped one of Buck, which is now the display on the little phone screen. In a few months, perhaps the picture will change to the Babe! (and I mean our baby...not The Great Bambino)
